Participation in primary education

Number or percentage of young people (aged 0-24 years) in primary education.

The figures in this publication are based on primary education as laid down in the relevant legislation. The publication distinguishes between primary education and special needs primary education. Primary education is intended for children aged 4-11 years and includes nursery education. Special needs primary education includes education for children with learning difficulties, children with behavioural problems, and socially disadvantaged four and five year-olds.

The figures on children in primary education are based on the yearly (1 October) enumerations by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Figures for school year 2004/'05 refer to the situation on 1 October 2004.

All figures are rounded to the nearest 10. As a result of rounding total figures may not exactly equal the sum of the separate figures.

Data available from school year 2000/'01.
