Caribbean Netherlands Student Survey
Do young people in the Caribbean Netherlands ever encounter bullying? What do they do in their free time? What are their future plans after graduation? This and more is presented in the Caribbean Netherlands Student Survey, held for the first time at the end of 2020. The survey forms part of the National Youth Monitor, compiled by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS).
Objective
The aim of the survey is to collect information about the living conditions of young people on Bonaire, Saba and St Eustatius, in order to get an idea of what their lives are like and how they are faring. This information is important for monitoring of youth policies.
How was the survey conducted?
An online questionnaire was developed, which was handed out to school-age children in secondary education (VO) and secondary vocational education (MBO) on Bonaire, Saba and St Eustatius at the end of 2020. The students received the questionnaire with a login code in the classroom and could fill it in at school. The questionnaire was available in four languages: English, Dutch, Spanish or Papiamentu.
What topics are included in the questionnaire?
To give an impression of the living conditions of young people, the questionnaire contains various topics such as household composition, well-being, health, lifestyle, neighbourhood, leisure activities, household chores and care, livelihood, school experience and plans for the future. Questions included with whom they live together, how happy they are, how healthy they feel, what they like to do in their free time, whether they play sports, whether they help out around the house, whether they enjoy school, and where they would like to live in the future.
